CFC 2009 Underway
By Mark Reiss, CFC Chairman
The fall 2009 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is off to a rip-roaring start. By the time you read this, our campaign this year will have touched the lives of more than 60,000 civilian and military employees spread throughout Northern California. It is with great honor that I carry out my CFC chair role to advance workplace giving in the federal community.
For 2009, the CFC Bay Area and the CFC Sacramento/Northern California have merged to form CFC Norcal. Our CFC Norcal executive cabinet, together with our CFC campaign manager and our dedicated loaned executives, have coalesced into an effective CFC team. As CFC chair, I'm striving to wring-out more efficiencies in CFC operations, so a greater percentage of hard earned donations go directly to designated charities. One good example is our upgraded websites - www.cfcnorcal.com - where you can perform a charity search and then e-pledge.
With the nation's unemployment rate expected to surpass 10 percent, we in the federal sector should count our good fortune to have a job with a relatively secure employer and consider those less fortunate. Our fellow Americans who are out of work and need help are overwhelming the services of many participating CFC charities. At the same time, these charities are facing a severe drop in donations. Our CFC contributions may be just the thing to close the gap.
Studies have shown that people who give are happier and more likely to be seen as leaders by their peers. So as we open this CFC season, I invite you to do yourself and your community a big favor - give! Get your pledge in by October 26th and you could win a laptop computer or an iPod in our first round of drawings. See the yellow insert in your CFC brochure for more information.
Moore Big on Less Energy
Michelle Moore, the Obama Administration's federal environmental executive tasked with promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship throughout the federal government operations, was in San Francisco October 7 to address a joint Federal Executive Board and Federal Regional Council audience.Moore's focus is on implementation strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by federal agencies. "I'm on a listening tour and I need your ideas and recommendations," she said inside the new San Francisco Federal Building, a facility that maximizes sustainable design principles. "Federal agencies need to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions from direct and indirect activities, prevent pollution, improve water-use efficiency, and carry out a high performance sustainable federal building design much like the one we're in."
Agency heads have 90 days to establish percentage reduction targets for direct emissions from government-owned sources and energy purchases.
Fed Fitness
In conjunction with an Obama Administration initiative to improve employee health through workplace wellness, the San Francisco Federal Executive Board is forming a Health/Wellness Network to review what local federal agencies have in place and how facilities and services, including gyms and clinics, can be shared.
OPM Director John Berry, who recently addressed the FEB in San Francisco, has proclaimed his vision of the federal government as America's model employer in the 21st century. Among his goals is the renewed attention to workplace and work-life issues, including a focus on wellness issues and encouraging positive health behaviors. Berry wants to develop a culture of wellness, including the encouragement of fitness and nutrition at the worksite, and hold agency leadership accountable for setting wellness goals.
"Tis the (FLU) Season
HHS Occupational Health Nurse Rosie Maciel provided a seasonable flu shot October 8 to federal employee Dominie F. Macapinlac in San Francisco. Federal employees are encouraged to get seasonal flue shots and to practice good hygiene habits to reduce he spread of flue viruses. In an average year, the flu is responsible for more that 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths in the United States. Getting vaccinated is the best form of protection against the seasonal flu. However, this type of flu shot does not provide protection against the H1N1 influenza. Prevention of the H1N1 flue virus requires a separate vaccine that may be available later this fall.Vet Information Forum in Berkeley
Congresswoman Barbara Lee hosted a Veterans Information Forum October 10 at Berkeley City College to highlight veteran benefits and the new Post-9/11 GI Bill. Federal agencies with information booths at the site included SBA, SSA, DOL and the VA. California has the largest number of military veterans in the nation.Travis Kick-off A Striking Success!
